We all have those times when our beards just don’t seem to cooperate. Whether you left your beard products at home for a week vacation, or the weather is just so dry nothing seems to work, they just tend to have those times when they’re super dried out, flaky, itchy and the hair just seems malnourished. Our ultimate beard repair regimen will be sure to make your beard look and feel like new.
Try any (or all) of the 3 methods below when you feel like you need to rejuvenate your beard and you’ll be feeling better in no time. While you can do this as often as you like, I don’t think you’d need to do it any more than once a week.
Let’s get into it!
The Hot Beard Oil Treatment
The hot towel treatment is no longer reserved for the clean shaven men of the world. That’s right, those of us that are bearded can still get the classic hot towel treatment, and we can even do it in the comfort of our own home! So pour yourself a glass of something warming, pull up your favorite chair and get ready to give yourself a nice relaxing beard treatment. The key to this one is to really focus on the experience. Make it something you look forward to!
What You’ll Need:
- Natural Beard Oil Conditioner
- Large Mixing Bowl
- Medium Sized Hand Towel
- Your Favorite Chair
How It’s Done:
- Drop some Beard Oil into your palm (you may choose to use a little bit more than your normal dosage; that’s completely fine), rub it between your hands and apply it to your beard as you normally would, making sure to get it all the way down to the roots and coat the hair and skin completely. A boar’s bristle beard brush may help with this as well.
- Fill a mixing bowl with hot water and set it aside within reach of your treatment area. Make sure to test that the water is not too hot.
- Wet your hand towel with warm water. It should be about as hot as you can safely tolerate.
- Lay back in your chair and wrap the towel around your entire beard.
- When your towel cools down, dip it in the bowl of hot water. It helps to have an assistant to replace the water in case it cools as well.
- Repeat this process for 15-30 minutes. When finished, wipe away excess oil and rinse your face with cold water to seal in the moisture.
DIY Beard Mask
A beard mask is meant to load up your beard and skin with reparative nourishment and deep moisture to reduce itching, flakiness and red cracking skin. It will also help soften the hair and bring back its healthy shine. Overall your beard will look and feel amazing. The best part is you can make this hair mask at home using ingredients you probably already have.
What You’ll Need:
- Raw Honey
- Olive Oil (or your other favorite carrier oil)
- Plastic Shopping Bag
- Small Bowl
How It’s Done:
- Measure out 1/4 cup of raw honey and 2 tbsp of olive oil
- Mix together ingredients using a spoon or a whisk. If you find it difficult to combine them it helps to heat them up in a double boiler.
- Apply ingredients generously to your beard. Feel free to apply extra to the hair on the top of your head, too!
- Cover your beard with a plastic shopping bag. You can always just hang the handles over your ears. And yes, you will look goofy while doing this.
- Note: While this step probably isn’t absolutely necessary, it will help trap and recirculate heat over the ingredients to open your pores and help them absorb into your hair and skin.
- Leave it on for 15-30 minutes and rinse off excess in the shower.
Total Beard Routine Reset
The above methods are great for applying extra moisture when your beard needs it and helps repair the skin and hair, but sometimes all your beard needs is a reset of your routine. This can be done in one day using the products you probably already have on hand. I like spend time and do this once every couple of weeks just to make sure my routine is still on point and I haven’t neglected anything due to laziness or lack of time. The beauty of this routine is that it really just requires that you reset your routine and make sure you hit every single step, morning and night, for one day.
What You’ll Need:
- Natural Beard Oil Conditioner
- Natural Beard Balm
- Natural Beard Butter
- Natural Beard Wash or Soap
- Natural Beard Conditioner
- Boar’s Bristle Brush
How It’s Done:
In the morning:
- Take a shower and make sure to deep clean your beard using a natural wash and conditioner formulated specifically for your beard.
- Out of the shower, lightly towel dry your beard and apply Beard Oil while the pores are still open. Brush it in with a Boar Bristle Brush.
- Finish drying your beard using a blow dryer set to low heat.
- Style your beard using either a Beard Balm or Beard Butter and brush again.
- If you need help with your morning styling and conditioning, follow our recommended Morning Beard Routine.
Throughout the day:
- Keep notice of your beard’s moisture levels. Apply more Beard Oil and brush throughout the day as needed.
In the Evening:
- Apply Beard Oil once more and brush it into your hair and skin.
- Top it off with some Beard Butter and brush that in as well.
- Follow our Evening Beard Care Routine if you’d like to see what we recommend.
Do any (or all) of these simple reparative treatments at least once a month and you’ll notice your beard will be in the best shape it’s ever been!
