Beard Hair Fall – Why is my beard hair falling out?

Table of Contents

Looking down at the sink in the can leave you wondering how you are producing quite so many falling hairs. Or after brushing you can be in awe at the rogue hairs covering every inch of your brush. This isn’t anything to panic about – on average we are losing up to 100 hairs every single day. Contrast this to the 30,000 hairs you have on your face and you can rest easy.

However, there are times that you may genuinely notice more hairs falling out than normal. There are a number of real reasons this can happen, all of which are preventable with a bit of knowledge. Here are some of the reasons you may be seeing more hair loss than usual.

You lose hair naturally

Facial hair grows in a cycle. Around 90% of that cycle is the hair actively growing. In the last 10%, your body growth pushes the old hair out of the follicle to make space for new hair. This hair loss is completely normal and expected. It’s your bodies natural process.

When you notice excess shedding or breakage, it can be temporary or sometimes permanent, depending on what causes it. The health of your beard growth and how fast it falls out is reliant on many factors.

Grooming & Hygiene

Understandably, a lack of hygiene will cause faster hair loss. Follicles that aren’t healthy are at much more risk of falling out. Keeping your beard clean and healthy with a good grooming routine is important.

On the other side, overwashing can cause hair loss and damaged follicles. It’s important to find a balance that works for you and doesn’t strip your skin of its own oils and moisturizing.

Using natural, organic shampoos is the first step. Add that to a grooming routine using natural oils, balms, and butter and you can be confident your beard will be clean, healthy and smelling good all day long.

If you haven’t got yourself beard care products yet, you can’t go wrong with the JC Grooming variety kit – a set of 100% organic, natural beard oil, balm and butter.

Stress

It’s easy to see stress from the condition of someone’s hair. Patchy growth, dry and brittle tufts are signs someone is stressed. This is one of the leading causes of hair loss in general amongst men. Even small stressors like changes to your work-routine or sleep schedule can cause hair loss.

Taking care of stressors in your life is good for your body all-round, and it’s something everyone should take into consideration.

Bad Combing or cutting technique

Another habit that can lead to the loss of excess beard hairs is combing or brushing your beard too much or even using the wrong techniques.

You shouldn’t be brushing your beard more than 3-4 times per day, as too much combing slowly pulls the hairs out – even healthy hairs will be pushed and pulled loose. And there is a right and wrong way to brush your hair – Using a natural wood comb is great for your beards upkeep, but just remember to avoid overbrushing.

When you brush, start at the ends and brush downwards, slowly making your way up to the skin. If you want some tips on cutting and trimming your beard the right way, we made a video showing just how to do that over on the JC Grooming YouTube channel.

Diet

A bad diet will leave your body lacking the nutrients to continue growing and regenerating naturally. Having a balanced, healthy diet gives your body the fuel to keep your hair strong and nourished. Eating things like nuts, raisins, eggs, potato, and red meats will keep your body and beard on point.

Proteins give your body the ability to produce the nutrients that keep your hair strong and moisturized. We take this step seriously, as should everyone. They say a healthy body starts in the kitchen and we believe this. So much so, we have written a guide on how to do just that. You can read it here.

Adding supplements to your diet can give you a boost of zinc and biotin, which can promote hair growth and prevent hair loss.

We hope you have gleaned some insights and possibly some comfort if you are a bit worried about excessive hair loss. If you want to get more tips or updates about JC Grooming, join the family over on our FacebookInstagram or Twitter channels.
