If you’re like most guys out there, you want to learn everything you can to grow a thicker, fuller, healthier beard. Once you’ve covered the obvious bases by having a solid grooming routine using top-quality products, and you’ve broken all of your bad beard habits, you can start to fine-tune your approach to beard care.

When you’re doing everything you can to assist your beard growth from the outside, you’ll want to turn your focus inward. This is where the real benefits come in, because they not only affect your beard health, but most of these will help keep your body and mind healthy and happy too! The best way to influence your beard health from the inside is by watching what you eat, and more specifically eating the right foods that help promote hair growth and healthy skin. Today I’m going to share my favorite beard-boosting foods that you can incorporate into your diet to grow the healthiest, happiest beard you can.

How Does Food Affect Beard Growth?

The food you eat is full of all kinds of nutrients, vitamins, and minerals (or at least it should be). Eating the foods that provide nutrients that are essential to improved hair growth will boost your beard growth and keep your beard nice and healthy.

The science behind it all has to do with regulating the DHT (dihydrotestosterone, a byproduct of testosterone) in our bodies. Too much of it, and we’d all be bald. DHT has a direct effect on facial hair growth, so the best way to grow more facial hair is to urge that DHT through the hairs and out of our bodies. Inactive DHT (the kind that sits in our bodies without being pushed out) causes hair loss and even baldness. Biotin is the leading vitamin that helps remove DHT. So naturally foods that are high in biotin will promote hair growth.

Along with those, you’ll need to make sure you’re getting enough micronutrients (vitamins and minerals) with a high fatty acid ratio, meaning they are high in saturated and monosaturated fats and low in polyunsaturated fats.

So now that we have the boring sciencey stuff out of the way, let’s get to the stuff you really came here for: the food! Without further ado, here is the list of my favorite beard-boosting foods.

1 Nuts

The magic ingredient in nuts that gives you beard boosting powers is selenium, which is found in the skin of the nut. Of all of the nuts out there, there is one that has such a high concentration of selenium that you only need two per day to get the full benefits for your beard. That magical nut is the Brazilian Nut. So pick up a can and just grab two a day and you’ll see a better beard in no time.

2 Eggs

Eggs have just about everything you need to help your beard grow fuller and stronger. They contain all kinds of vitamins and even biotin! Eating eggs helps boost testosterone production while the biotin urges that DHT out of our bodies.

3 Potatoes

Potatoes are one of the most versatile foods out there. If you look up any list for the best foods to do ____ you’ll probably find them on there somewhere. And they sit atop our list today for beard growth! This science of this is pretty simple: carbohydrates force your body to produce more testosterone, and potatoes are high in carbs! I will say, though, this doesn’t mean that you can go out and cram your face full of fries and chips and hope for a better beard. You’ll want unprocessed potatoes to see the best results.

4 Beef

Beef is one of the highest sources of natural saturated fats, which help promote the production of testosterone. This testosterone leads to the active DHT we talked about above, leading to boosted beard hair growth. It’s also high in iron, which allows your body to produce hemoglobin. Hemoglobin carries oxygen for the growth and repair of cells in your body including those which, you guessed it, help stimulate beard hair growth.

5 Gelatin

Gelatin is a rich source of amino acids, which are the building blocks of proteins. For those looking to boost facial hair growth, the amino acids glycine and proline are especially important, as they are collagen proteins which is what your body uses to build hair, skin, and nails.

6 Orange Juice

Everyone knows orange juice is one of the best sources of vitamin C that you can get quickly and easily without taking a pill. What you may not know is that vitamin C does a lot more than just keep you from getting a cold! It also helps keep DHT active, which as you might just know by now is great for beard growth.

7 Kale

Kale isn’t exactly my favorite food, but it definitely has earned its place on this list. It’s a high source of vitamin A, which the body uses to repair skin tissues. And as we all know, healthy skin leads to a healthy beard.

If you don’t like the taste of kale, you can make it more mild by rubbing olive oil on it and baking it. It will have much less taste and will keep most of its powerful nutrients.

8 Fish

Fish is a good source of protein and B vitamins which help your body produce hair and skin. In addition, fish is a good source of omega-3s, which help protect the cell membrane so that your beard hairs remain healthy and strong.

So gentlemen, that about wraps up my list of the best foods for your beard. There are specific reasons that this diet will boost your beard, but as you’ve noticed a lot of these foods are really just recommended for an overall healthy diet. If you keep up a diet like this you’ll notice you feel better, look better, and your healthier beard will just be the icing on the cake.
