We all know that beard oil is great for the beard, but is it possible to over-do it? The short answer: absolutely. Is it the end of the world? Read on to find out. We’re going to discuss the negative side effects that come along with using too much beard oil, how to identify if you’re over-applying and what to do about it if you are.

What Happens if You Over-Apply Beard Oil?
When you use too much beard oil, it sits on top of your skin. This is when you get that overly greasy buildup on your beard and skin. You’ll find it dripping into your shirt, on your phone and wherever else your face touches in the first 30 minutes or so after applying.

The big problem here, besides having beard grease all over, is that this oil is sitting over the opening of your pores until it is wiped off. This means any dirt or grime in there gets trapped and is able to sit which can lead to red spots, acne, irritation and infected follicles. These are painful and unsightly side effects to something that is meant to be beneficial for your beard.

The good news is, it’s pretty difficult to over-use beard oil and when you find you are it’s simple to fix and the side effects will disappear within a few days.

How Do I Know if I’m Using too Much?

If you’re using too much beard oil, you’ll know because your beard is experiencing the issues listed above. You’ll have red spots, irritation, acne and infected follicles. Your hairs will hurt, your skin will have painful spots and your beard will feel greasy and wet after every application.

How Much Beard Oil Should I Be Using?

There’s really no right answer to this. Every beard is different and everybody has different needs. It all comes up to trial and error. Use beard oil for a week or so, and if it feels too dry, either apply more often or more with each use. If your beard feels overly greasy and you notice these negative side effects, you’ll need to cut back a bit.

I’m Using Too Much! What Now?

The first thing you want to do when your beard is clogged and over-application occurs is wash it with a high quality natural beard soap. This will cut through the oil, strip it out and clean the pores to help treat your acne and buildup.

Next, you’ll want to follow up with a proper amount of beard oil or beard butter. It sounds counter-intuitive, but once you’ve stripped all the excess oil out, you’ll want to be sure you don’t over-dry it.
Finally, start testing your usage and start with less. slowly work your way up until you find that sweet spot and your beard is soft and conditioned without being overly greasy.

Final Thoughts

If you find out that you’re over-applying, you don’t necessarily need to switch everything up. I personally love beard oil, and I want to use a little more sometimes. However, I know exactly how much I need from trial and error, so if I know I’m going to be using more, I adjust the rest of my routine accordingly. I’ll cut back on my evening routine, skip a day or two of application or use wash a little more frequently. Just be smart and remember that everything good is best in moderation.
